The Waiting To Exhale image includes; Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, Terry McMillan, Angela Bassett, and Lela Rochon. Currently, the image is in the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. and until now, has never been available for private sale.

This was my first-time meeting each of my subjects. Whitney was the first one to arrive and we were introduced right away. I’ll never forget her first words to me: “where’s your music?” I took her over to my CD collection, and as she looked through it, I saw a smile on her face. Then she looked over at me and said, “we are going to get along just fine!” She would run over to the CD player and change the music, then run back on set. It was a great way to keep everyone energized and focused on the task at hand.

When it came time for the last image, I asked my subjects to close their eyes and hug – and that’s how this image came to be! I just love how it captured their emotion in that moment.
